| Studio Update: With the economic crunch, and the elections I have been reflecting about the meaning of value. In many ways I have felt let down by the lack of value in postmodern art, and since I see it every time I visit anything to do with contemporary art, I experience a disheartening feeling--the themes are so far away from how I love and think about art. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed writing the following criticism:
And I thoroughly enjoyed writing a new tutorial, the first in a series on connecting philosophy to art.
This past month I have also spent time reflecting on how much of value I have created since my move to NY, three years ago: Two major works. I finished two major works,
Venus and Artemis, after years of struggle. Finishing a major work is always a good sign that I am in the right place. 37 Art Tutorials. 5 Art Reviews of Exceptional Artists. 17 Aesthetic Commentaries , both revised and new. 4 Videos about my creative process. 90+ Landscapes, paintings and drawings. 20+ Interiors and Still Lifes. 25+ Figurative works. 1 Lecture about the close proximity of figurative artists to great Humanists in history. A workshop in New York's Central Park and one in the interior of Mexico. Mentored 8 wonderful artists. And hosted a great group of artists, in over 30 life drawing sessions in my loft. Especially in this time, I think thinking about values is a good thing. ------ Economical Prints
In the last month I have sold 9 of my recent Greek plein air paintings (September 2008), marked by a red asterisk(*). They are all oil paintings, 9x12", and done with intense energy--capturing the moment before it flees. If you are interested in purchasing one or more of them don't hesitate to contact me.
Okay, that is November's Update. I won't have the next update up until mid-December, as I am off traveling again. Cheers, Michael Newberry newberryworkshop@earthlink.net
