Monthly Studio Update - December, 2006

December Studio Update
Studio Update:

Earlier in November I visited my sister, Laura, in California. A year and half ago I left several plein air paintings there, I brought them back to my loft in NY, had a really good look at them, and did a little editing. They are oil, 12x16", painted on location, in about an hour, plus the little clean-up in my studio.

Here are a few of them:

Little Whisper

The Rioting Yucca

Ebbing Gray

Desert Waves

Descending Mist

The Opening

The Last Guard

Pool of Light

Sentinel

Crust

Purple Waft

If you are interested in any of these don't hesitate to contact me. MichaelTNewberry@earthlink.net

In other news I revised an old website, www.AnArtistsVoice.org It is where you can read my more polemical articles, which I think are a wonderful contrast to my online tutorials, www.michaelnewberry.com/Tutorial/tut.html Also there I have links to friends of mine that are extremely creative and making very positive contributions to human knowledge and culture.

Jan Koenderink, Vision Scientist

One of them is Jan Koenderink, one of Europe's leading vision scientists. http://www.phys.uu.nl/~wwwpm/HumPerc/koenderink.html Along with his wife, Andrea Van Doorn, they are making great inroads in visual, human perception. An uncanny experience I have had with him, in real time, is that, I swear, we literally look at the world in the same way. On his link you can see the huge body of work he has done on form, space, and light. He also wrote an interesting piece in response to a lecture I presented on how artists use transparency to create spatial depth. http://www.perceptionweb.com/perc0403/editorial.pdf

It was kind of strange giving a lecture to room full of vision scientists. I had no idea if what I was presenting was "old hat" to them, but I had never heard my take on transparency voiced in art history or criticism before. I simply gave the talk with a lot of sincerity--and I was delighted find out that, indeed, I had something to offer them. Here is my online transcription of my lecture on transparency: http://www.newberryworkshop.com/Tutorial/trans/trans.html and Part 2: http://www.newberryworkshop.com/Tutorial/trans2/trans2.html

Enjoy art and life.

Till the New Year.
