STUDIO UPDATE: AUGUST 2003
Studio Updates:
Funny, for this Studio Update I thought I had nothing to show for the last month as I have been concentrated on the Foundation for the Advancement of Art's Fall Conference, INNOVATION, SUBSTANCE, VISION: THE FUTURE OF ART. But, I do, I have some sketches of a young woman enlightened by reading. The setting will be a modern library; she will be in an airy and open space under a glass and steel atrium.
This is the first study for the idea of the woman's pose:

Once I am satisfied with the pose then I would draw a detailed nude including key skeletal points and muscle groups. Then either on the same drawing or a new one draw the light and shadows falling on the forms of the body. I know I want the style of the woman/girl to have something of an Audrey Hepburn quality, simple, sheik, and understated clothes.
An important concept guiding this painting would be to have the book she is reading spot lit and the reflection from that would illuminate the girl's face. Here is a very simple light study:

For the background I had in mind a dome-like atrium in a modern architectural style. After I had the idea in my mind I searched for interiors of buildings and came across this Nervi design:

We will have to see if and when the concept for this painting will develop; I think for the next few months most of my energy will be concerned with the Foundation.
