Michael Newberry, Egghead,
2008-10, pastel on black paper, 19 x 25 inches
One of the techniques I use in portrait drawing is to shape the head like an egg, it is an abstraction that helps the artist tilt and maintain the overall structure of the face without getting lost in details. This pastel was a light and color study for the head of Venus. In a way it is an egghead, and I have a perspective that all art is a self-portrait of the artist.
