How Meaningful is Art?

A few insights that you might appreciate

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso

"Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable."
George Bernard Shaw

"Art is the only way to run away without leaving home." Twyla Tharp

"The beauty one can find in art is one of the pitifully few real and lasting products of human endeavor." J. Paul Getty

Feeling Mortal

A recent health scare leads to a new insight

After a serious bout of pneumonia, I felt mortal for the first time, and a deep feeling that now was the period for meaningful placements of my works. It has been rewarding that several of my works have recently found loving and caring people.

Some bio details and questions that motivate my art

I grew up in La Jolla, California and started painting at 11 years old. In 1974 as a fine art major I began studying art with American Modernist Edgar Ewing at U.S.C., and I have virtually painted every day since then. In 1977 I moved to The Hague, Holland and studied life drawing at the Free Academy Physcopolis. From 1990 to 1994 I taught life drawing, composition, and painting at Otis College of Art and Design. I have exhibited in Athens, Rome, New York, and Los Angeles.

While painting I ask myself many questions some of which are: What does depth of spirit look like? Is a man and/or a woman the center of the Universe? What is it that makes humanity special? Is art key to our evolution as a species? And what does it look like to be in the moment?

Where does identity end and art begin?

Adam and Eve
oil on linen, 72 x 92 inches.
Adam, Eve, dark, light, shy or not, fresh, sinful, spark, bellybuttons, and play for a new humanity?

Arabesque - Female Couple
oil on canvas, 60 x 36 inches.
Is intimacy a part of art? Is love universal? How does a painter convey love?

Arabesque - Male Couple
oil on canvas, 36 x 60 inches.
Is love pretty much the same for everyone? Are some ways better than others in portraying gay intimacy? Is it possible to give the feeling of universality with this subject? Can an artist delay the viewers' reflex reaction to the subject and enable empathy first?

Unbearable Lightness of Being
oil on canvas, 36 x 58 inches.
When we are alone, and just feel? Free? Fearless? Full? Whiteness? Happy?

oil on canvas, 46 x 42 inches.
What does masculinity look like? How much depth can we create and still see? What does the male nude mean to Western Civilization? What does it say about our humanity? Does it support our individuality? Is art about the human spirit? If so, is the nude a good way to express it?

Portrait of Pietros Maneos
oil on canvas, 42 x 36 inches.
Many of you know the wonderful quote: "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." Roughly attributed to George Santayana. That thought was running through my mind in doing this portrait of my friend, poet, Pietros Maneos.
